The Thessaloniki Port Authority, sensitized towards problems faced by homeless fellow citizens, has immediately responded to the initiative taken by volunteer, fellow citizens from the health sector and has founded the Social Infirmary, with the kind support of the Bishop of Neapoli-Stavroupoli Mr. Varnavas and the cooperation of the Municipality of Thessaloniki.

The "Social Infirmary" is for all people who have no access to the public health and social security system, and mostly the homeless and people with no means to support their own selves. It is housed in an area of 58 square meters that is found in the old telephone-office building, next to Warehouse 15, close to gate 6 of the port. The specific building is also accessible to people with special needs. It operates on a daily basis from 1:00pm until 10pm. It is equipped with an examination room with all the necessary equipment and a pharmacy, while it hosts a fully equipped dentistry. Visitors may access the infirmary through the main entrance of THPA, at the beginning of Nikis Avenue.

Volunteer services are provided at the Social Infirmary by doctors with the following specializations: Pathologist, Surgeon, Pediatrician, Otorhinolaryngology's, Ophthalmologist, Pediatric Surgeon, Nuclear Physician, Histopathologist, Anesthesiologist, Neurologist – Psychiatrist, Bio pathologist, Nephrologist, and others.
