The 2nd workshop of the FUTUREMED Observatory – GEIE took place in Marseille, the 9th October 2014. The objective of this event was double: from one side, the goal was to gather all the partners together for discussing about the features of the Observatory which is currently under creation; from the other side, this meeting was the occasion to start to present the Observatory to the external partners.

The following external stakeholders have attended this unique encounter, where professionals, scientific actors, and public authorities from all over the MED zone have animated a passionate debate on the future directions regarding the Mediterranean Port-Hinterland integration!

The workshop has started with an overall presentation of the project by the FUTUREMED coordinator: Andrea Campagna, who has presented the interest of the project in the framework of the Mediterranean Port-Hinterland context, enabling the start of an interactive discussion on the reasons why Mediterranean ports are suffering from a lapse of competitiveness compared to their northern counterparts! The need for a shared strategy for the MED port-hinterland system has been underlined and agreed by both partners and stakeholders, who have also stressed that this issue should be a priority for the European Union. The territorial integration of the MED space is felt today as a primordially topic by a large number of actors.
The second speaker, Jean-André Lasserre from AFT (leader of the Capitalisation Work Package), has underlined the advantage of this form of organization, and has shown how the EEIG will behave in order to encourage a Mediterranean strategy for the Port-Hinterland Integration. Means of actions such as position and policy papers, guidelines and white papers will be used to raise awareness on our ideas. Moreover, we intend to participate to a growing number of events on behalf of the FUTUREMED Observatory, and eventually organize our own events, in order to orientate the debate towards the concerns of our members.
The last two sessions, leaded by Massimiliano Angelotti (Friuli-Venezia-Giulia region) and Aristos Halatsis have shown to the audience the tools and studies achieved by FUTUREMED so far. Interactive tools such as the Visibility Platform, providing an interactive mapping of the Mediterranean port-hinterland connections, or studies such as the gap analysis in the MED ports, will constitute the base for our further activities, and effective instruments that could be used by our members.
In general, the workshop has been very useful, external stakeholders have widely participated to the discussion and shown a great interest to the EEIG project. The next steps of creation of the Observatory will be followed by a much larger group of stakeholders.
Let’s meet again during our third FUTUREMED Observatory workshop, when the contract of creation of the EEIG will be signed.
